Train Dance (2012)

by Laura Trager

This piece is a manifestation of and reflection on a twofold movement: although the association of train sounds and electronic music has (more or less explicitly) been made before, valorizing train sounds as the exclusive source for a musical composition has still subversive potential – also or especially on a symbolic level. The noise of the subway as the sonic manifestation of a product of industrialization/urbanization can be understood as a symbol for the subjection of man under the machine – both literally and figuratively speaking. Its appropriation by a subject as a means of self‐expression turns the system against itself and thus challenges the positions of suppressor and suppressed. On the other hand, my creative approach is the ultimate totalitarian gesture: it is the epitome of music as “the organization of sound”, since this is literally the only creative input to the piece. My creative process of isolating, standardizing and re-organizing sound bits into an order of my liking so that they convey my message to my audience like letters in a written statement seems to parallel the development of civilization towards the contemporary post‐industrial society on a micro level. Which of these aspects prevails lies in the ear of the listener.
